Greetings from Lubbock: A Postcard History

Local historian Cindy Martin with her friend Sally Abbe has been collecting Lubbock postcards for years and she shares many of them in this presentation. Since Lubbock is primarily a twentieth and now twenty-first century city the popularity of postcards after 1901 makes the medium a logical method of documenting the town’s development, expansion and history.

The images as well as the messages relayed offer a unique, often personal look at the past. This presentation will look at Lubbock’s history through postcards from the earliest real photo postcards to those found for sale today.

NOTE DAY CHANGE - Beginner Genealogy February 23rd Class: Military Records

Beginner Genealogy Classes

Military records don’t just document wars—they tell deeply personal stories of service, sacrifice, and everyday life. In this class, we’ll explore how military records can unlock powerful details about your ancestors, even if they never saw combat.

You’ll learn which conflicts created which records, how to use draft cards, service files, and pension records, and where to find them online. We’ll also talk about how to read between the lines of military documents to uncover clues about age, family, health, and movement that don’t always jump out at first glance.

What we’ll cover:

  • Why military records matter for genealogy
  • Which wars generated which types of records
  • Draft cards, service records, and pension files
  • Where to find military records (FamilySearch, Fold3, and National Archives)
  • How to interpret military documents beyond the obvious
  • Hands-on search activity using real record

No military experience required—just curiosity and an ancestor who lived during a time of conflict.

Beginner Genealogy March 16th Class: Immigration Records

Beginner Genealogy Classes

Immigration Records: How They Got Here [March 2026]

Immigration records help answer one of the biggest questions in family history: how did they get here—and why? In this class, we’ll explore the records that document your ancestors’ arrival and movement, from ship manifests and naturalization papers to border crossings and alternate routes into the country.

You’ll learn how immigration patterns, timelines, and historical push-and-pull factors shaped family decisions and migration paths. Immigration research often builds beautifully on military records and can explain sudden relocations, name changes, and unexpected gaps in your research.

What we’ll cover:

  • Passenger lists and ship manifests
  • Naturalization records and citizenship clues
  • Border crossings and alternate immigration routes
  • Immigration patterns and timelines
  • Push/pull factors behind migration decisions
  • Hands-on immigration search activity using real records

Whether your ancestors arrived through Ellis Island, crossed a land border, or took a less traditional path, this class will help you trace their journey and place it into historical context.
